Residents storm Flamingo Tiles company damaging property to protest polution by the company

23, Jul 2014

More than five hundred locals at Kitengela marched to the flamingo tiles company and damaged property worth millions of shillings. They say the factory is to blame for the heavy air pollution, which has reportedly led to health problems. The protest that started early in the morning saw the Kwa Saitoti road barricaded with stones and trees making the road impassable. The chaos later led to the closure of the factory by the Isinya deputy county commissioner. He ordered that the company remain closed until it receives the NEMA environment impact assessment report. Locals claim that the company that opened its doors six years ago in the area started using chemicals that are hazardous. They asked the company to take seriously environmental matters to curb the high level of toxicity that is a threat to many lives.
