Onyancha siblings rule junior tournament

Onyancha siblings Derrick and Michelle starred in the Kenya Open Junior tennis championships, claiming boys’ and girls’ under-18 titles in Nairobi.

Derrick, who is currently one of the top male Kenyan players, won all his five matches in the boys’ category to emerge the overall winner.

He beat Emmanuel Orwa 6-4, 6-0, Ishamael Changawa 6-0, 6-3 before dismissing Vincent Ocharo and Omar Bashir with uniform sets of 6-0, 6-0.

Derrick wrapped up his triumphant campaign with a deserved 6-1, 6-1 victory over Raval Ajuni. Changawa did not return to Mombasa empty-handed as he lifted boys’ under-16 Category, with Sheil Kotecha claiming under-14 honours.

Isaya Etale of Kibera’s Zion Zone won under-12 category with Keean Shah emerging top in the under-10 category.

Michelle recorded a double, winning both girls’ under-16 and under-18 age groups. The girls’ under-14 honours went to Stephanie Mbaya, while Sneha Kotecha won under-12 category. Keya Shah ruled the girls’ under-10 category, where she beat opponents to the title.

Players take rest before resuming action with the annual Coca Cola-sponsored JD Junior Championships at the Jim Davies Tennis Academy in Nairobi next month.
