Meru Governor Peter Munya has demanded action against three deputy county commissioners for allegedly taking sides in politics.

The county chief was heckled at Maili Tatu in Igembe Central on Sunday, as he issued cheques to beneficiaries of the county sacco credit scheme, forcing him to interrupt his speech briefly.

The hecklers shouted that they needed to be supplied with water and Mr Munya said he had a meeting planned in the area to discuss water issues. Things threatened to get out of hand but Munya restrained Party of National Unity (PNU) youths from ejecting the hecklers.

"I blame my sound system team for failing to provide adequate capacity to speak above this din," said Munya.

Munya later gave his speech, saying Sh67.5 million in credit was being distributed to groups by the county sacco this year while another Sh67 million was distributed last year. He praised the repayment rates as encouraging.

The governor claimed Imenti North Deputy County Commissioner Jim Njoka, Igembe Central's Buxton Mayabi and Igembe South's James Koskey were siding with Jubilee Party.

He said the three failed to take action when hired goons disrupted PNU rallies even when they clearly knew who was involved. He claimed the goons disrupted the Jamhuri Day celebrations in Meru last year "as the security and administration officials watched".

"The DC in Imenti North has declined to take action on the culprits involved despite our appeals, which show he is biased against us," Munya claimed.

The three were not immediately available for comment.
