Residents threaten to block Nairobi – Nakuru highway with coffins

Residents of Kinungi centre, along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway have threatened to block the highway using caskets if the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) fails to erect speed bumps in two weeks time.

This comes after the authority failed to live up to its promise made a month ago.

The residents, through their leaders, yesterday accused NTSA and the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) of lying to them.

Last year, senior officers from the two agencies visited the accident-prone area and promised the bumps would be erected by the first week of December.

Area MCA Samuel Waithuki wondered what had come of the promise. He said two more people have been killed by speeding cars since the agencies made the promise.

Only speed signs have been erected on the road, which many drivers are ignoring. "We shall continue to demand for speed bumps," he said.    -Anthony Gitonga
