Recall new commanders, CORD tells Inspector General of Police

Kenya: The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has now demanded that Inspector General David Kimaiyo withdraws the appointment of County Police Commanders saying the exercise was done irregularly.

CORD, through Homa Bay Senator Otieno Kajwang, said the police boss abused the law in making the appointments, adding Mr Kimaiyo usurped the powers of the National Police Service Commission (NPSC).

“We are demanding that Kimaiyo withdraws the said appointments and follow the laid down procedure under law to interview and appoint the officers,” said Mr Kajwang, who told journalists he was speaking on behalf of ODM and CORD.

He further warned that CORD parliamentarians will veto any attempt to weaken the NPSC and give Kimaiyo sweeping powers.

At a press conference, the outspoken Senator wondered why the IG ignored the Kavuludi-led commission and instead acted unilaterally.

“The IG and his two deputies are members of the commission, why does he want to make decisions alone?” asked the Senator.

He said both the Constitution and the Police Service Act, recognises NPSC as the body to appoint the County Commanders.
