Job Purpose Statement

The Digital Business department drives the Group’s Digital Financial Services agenda, with a mobile-first business model that seeks to gain significance amongst consumers and entrepreneurs in Africa.

The division is mandated to lead the development of strategic capabilities and partnerships, which enhance the bank’s strategic positioning in digital financial services.

The Senior Data Scientist plays a leadership position in the data science department and is responsible for:

  • Actualize the data science strategy within the assigned credit segment.
  • Key problem-solving partner to the relevant business leads by collaborating with them in understanding their unique business challenges.
  • Translate the business needs into actionable data science-focused initiatives to provide solutions and/or recommendations to enable business excellence.
  • Coordinate the creation of experimental data modelling designs by the Data Scientists, ensuring A/B tests are run constantly in order to evaluate changes in the business’s product/services.
  • Lead the team in project execution to ensure that projects are designed well, completed on time, within budget and to service delivery specification.

Key Accountabilities (Duties and Responsibilities)

Financial

Responsible for achievement of the annual financial targets both P&L and balance sheet for customer segment.

Data Science Enablement

  • Actualize the data science strategy within the assigned credit segment.
  • Key problem-solving partner to the relevant business leads by collaborating with them in understanding their unique business challenges.
  • Translate the business needs into actionable data science focused initiatives to provide solutions and/or recommendations to enable the business excellence.
  • Coordinate the creation of experimental data modelling designs by the Data Scientists, ensuring A/B tests are run constantly in order to evaluate changes in the business’s product/services.

Internal business processes 

  • Be an advocate for a continually improving way of working within the team to drive efficient and impactful engagement and accurate delivery of service.
  • 100% adherence to policies, procedures and statutory guidelines.
  • Lead the team in project execution to ensure that projects are designed well, completed on time, within budget and to service delivery specifications.
  • Audit, Compliance and Risk Rating = Satisfactory.
  • Audit issues closed within the quarter of identification, or within the agreed time frames, whichever is shorter.
  • Nil repeat findings.
  • Policy and procedure knowledge –rating of Reading 100%; Test 90%. These are the minimum scores required to confirm (1) All assigned policies are ‘Read’; (2) Assigned policy or procedures tests are undertaken and the lowest acceptable score is 90%.

Strong relationships and communications with stakeholders to ensure customer satisfaction and that concerns are addressed and expectations met.

Learning and growth 

  • Provide overall leadership of unit and define a framework for developing it into a high performing and engaged team, through managing their performance, motivating, coaching and training them accordingly.
  • Up-to-date and actioned competency assessments and development plans for the team.
  • Nil disruption to business/loss of business due to lack of appropriate numbers of qualified, available staff within the team.
  • Maintain a consistently high own competency score and development plan maintenance. Maintain the desired Leadership - 360-degree feedback score.

Ideal Job Specifications

Academic:

Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Machine Learning, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, or any other related quantitative field. An equivalent of the same in working experience is also acceptable for the position. Masters in these subjects would be a great plus

Professional:

Big Data or Data Science certification from recognized institutions

Desired work experience: 

5 years of working experience working within data science capacity within a fast-paced and complex business setting, preferably working as a Senior Data Scientist. The candidate will also have experience working with machine learning libraries, for example, XGBoost, OpenCV, sklearn, among others.

Ideal Job Specifications

Substantial experience working on strategy or full-life cycle data science as well as experience working with data mining tools such as SAS, Python, SPSS, and R. Experience in data mining and predictive modeling inclusive of linear and non-Linear regression, logistic regression, and time series analysis models. Experience working with deep learning algorithms and large datasets as well as experience working with unstructured data is a plus.

Technical Competencies

  • Possess vast experience and expertise with probability and statistics, inclusive of machine learning, experimental design, and optimization. As a bonus, he/she will also have had experience working with Hadoop.
  • Understanding of good software development practices and can work within a shared codebase: TDD, refactoring, pair-programming etc.
  • Production data science experience, i.e. not just fitting a model but being held accountable for performance and reliability in production
  • Demonstrate expertise working with and maintaining open-source data analysis platforms, including but not limited to: Scikit-Learn, TensorFlow, Spark, HDFS, Kafka and other high volume data tools.
  • SQL and NoSQL storage tools, such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, MongoDB and ElasticSearch.
