About the Africa Communications Manager

We are looking for a communication professional who is comfortable working both independently and in teams, highly responsive, and able to lead initiatives as well as take direction from others. The right candidate will be a skilled and energetic communicator able to help, support and coordinate our work regionally and globally.

This position requires someone who is detail-oriented, creative and has strong interpersonal skills. This candidate must be a resilient and flexible team player who can handle a fast paced, high pressure, highly collaborative team culture.

The ideal candidate is a professional communicator with proven experience in developing and implementing communication strategies at the regional level, able to effectively coordinate with other teams in order to also amplify regional campaigns at the global level when relevant. The candidate must be able to craft regionally-relevant narrative and messaging, proactively seeking new opportunities to communicate our core messages, handling media requests and cultivating media relationships, and speaking on behalf of the organization in relevant forums and networks.

This is a fast-paced job which often requires juggling multiple tasks simultaneously, often tackling several issues in parallel.

Required Qualifications

  • At least six (6) years of experience in communications, advocacy campaigns, and professionally practicing some of the following competencies
  • Knowledge of campaigning work and an ability to exercise independent/good judgement on campaign strategy and campaign management
  • Ability to manage self, others with proven mentorship ability, and projects
  • Excellent teamwork, problem solving, program planning and management skills
  • A resilient and flexible team player who can handle a fast paced, high pressure, highly collaborative team culture
  • An excellent communicator with first class writing and collaboration skills in English 
  • Strong aptitude for communication, facilitation and training skills to help, guide, inspire, consult and coordinate with remote and diverse teams from different regions

Desired (but not required) skills and experiences 

  • Minimum 3 years of experience doing communications for a non-governmental organization, non-profit or campaigns
  • Network of existing contacts and ability to strengthen campaigning relationships with organisations and researchers advocating for climate solutions/ just transition to renewable energy, preferably around the world
  • Relationships with key editors and journalists from key media outlets in Africa region
  • Experience building local to national or national to international campaign strategies
  • A track record of using non-traditional and traditional media together to achieve communications objectives around grassroot campaigns
  • Experience in audience engagement through digital channels
  • Experience developing and running communications trainings for groups of staff, local groups and volunteers
  • Ability to communicate in the main regional languages other than English
  • Experience and competency working in multicultural groups and countries
  • Experience using Meltwater, Salesforce, Airtable, Falcon, Google Suite, Slack, and Zoom or similar systems
