ABOUT THE PEOPLE TEAM

The People Team has a mandate to build a world-class remote organization, ensuring an exceptional employee experience for our people who work tirelessly to help us achieve our mission to transform Africa by developing the next generation of leaders. ALI has ambitious plans to scale to 10, 000 staff in the next 10 years, and the People Team is focused on building the foundation to enable this scale.

The People Team is made up of the following functions:

  • Talent Acquisition: attracts and selects top talent to join our organization
  • People Experience: manages onboarding and initiatives to keep our staff engaged and informed
  • Professional Development: develops and drives learning and upskilling initiatives for our staff members
  • People Operations: develop and manage robust systems and processes for seamless People operations

ABOUT THE ROLE

As the People Operations Lead, you will lead the People Operations team that will support the organization as it scales, ensuring that staff have access to the right people information, systems and processes. You are a strong operations and people manager, with a keen eye for detail and an ability to build robust and scalable systems and processes. In addition, you have high empathy and an understanding of how to navigate sensitive employee matters.

This role reports directly to the Head of People & Strategy.

Responsibilities of the role are:

  • Shaping a strong People Operations strategy that aligns and moves the organization towards its mission with a focus on innovation and scale.
  • Acting as a thought partner to the Head of People & Strategy, contributing to the People team’s vision and strategy with an express focus on how process and system initiatives will shape people and culture.
  • Lead the implementation and management of the systems, processes and policies that support our people. 
  • Be accountable for, and manage the team that drives end-to-end People Operations (including systems management, payroll, employee relations, performance management, contracting and labour, people data management, immigration, etc.)
  • Understand workforce needs as the organization scales managing costs while staying competitive with salary, benefits, perks, leaves, etc.
  • Collaborate with teams across the organization to ensure we consistently provide a powerful experience for our customers - the ALI staff.

YOUR SUPERPOWERS

  • Previous HR experience is not a requirement for this role.
  • A bachelor’s degree.
  • At least 6 years of experience in consulting or strategic operations roles, with a demonstrable track record of people management, as well as building and optimizing systems and processes.
  • Ability to own, execute and deliver strategically on short- and long-term projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent people and team management skills.
  • High empathy, self-awareness and a customer/people-oriented solutions mindset.
  • Superior attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
  • Strong ability to engage with stakeholders at all levels (from junior staff to members of the Executive Committee).
  • Ability to make and stand behind difficult or unpopular decisions.
  • Strategic and innovative thinker; able to prioritize and use sound judgment and decision-making.
  • Experience in managing a remote team.
  • Experience with developing compensation & benefits structures, change management, employee relations and people operations
