Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), a State Corporation under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperatives, State Department for Fisheries, Aquaculture and the Blue Economy was established by an Act of parliament (The Science and Technology Act Cap. 250 of the Laws of Kenya of 1979) which has since been repealed by The Science, Technology and Innovation Act No.28 of 2013.
KMFRI's mandate is to undertake research in "marine and freshwater fisheries, aquaculture, environmental and ecological studies, and marine research including chemical and physical oceanography", in order to provide scientific data and information for sustainable development of the Blue Economy. The Institute is also mandated to cooperate with other organizations and institutions of higher learning in training programmes and on matters of relevant research.
The Institute has Research Centers and Stations located at Mombasa, Kisumu, Naivasha, Baringo, Kegati, Sangoro, Sagana, Shimoni, Turkana, a research substation at Gazi and the Nairobi liaison office.
KMF/7. CORPORATE COMMUNICATION AND PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER (KMFRI GRADE 7)- POSITION ONE (1)
- Basic Salary Scale: KShs. 61,394 – KShs. 79,812 P.M.

(a) Duties and responsibilities of officers in this position entail:
Participating in the implementation of communication policies and strategies
Participating in the planning of organizational events by carefully determining all requirements and liaising with HoD to meet objectives of the functions
Inspecting meeting venues, conference halls and training rooms to ensure they are properly set-up prior to functions taking place in the venues
Participating in designing, writing first draft press releases, case studies, articles, leaflets, journals, reports, publicity brochures, website content; editing, and moderating social media content where necessary
Preparing advertisement content for newspapers and other internal and external media outlets;
Coordinating educational visits and liaising with Educational Tours Committee for arrangement of the academic tours and responding to inquiries and requests from the institutions appropriately
Providing input in the preparation of departmental work plans and annual budgets
Responding to queries made across online platforms such as Facebook, Twitter etc.
Editing first draft press releases and assigning appropriate headlines for review by senior PR officers
Contributing to implementing and maintaining effective communication channels
Contributing to the development, monitoring and updating of the Communications schedule and ensure communications objectives are implemented;
Contributing to implementing effective and coordinated change management communication and engagement activities;
Editing and translating scientific papers and research work to a language that can be consumed by mass audiences
Undertaking general administrative; preparing client files, taking minutes during meetings, presentations, and schedules, as well as monitoring relevant media coverage, and fielding telephone calls from the media and clients.
Incorporating online tools to build relationships with current and prospective clients
Gathering or researching on publishable information from the public and media for sharing with various stakeholders
Assisting in offering photography services, caption and crop photos for use
Analyzing social media metrics reports and preparing actionable reports
Creating awareness to the public on the Institute’s activities, services and products;
(b) Requirements for Appointment/Person Specifications
For direct appointment in this grade, a candidate must have:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Communications Studies; or Journalism or Language & Literary Studies; or Public Relations; or Mass Communication; or Social Media Journalism; or Science Communication
Relevant job experience preferably in digital branding and content generation
Attained minimum C+ (plus) in KCSE
Relevant professional certificate in science communication or its equivalent
Proficiency in computer applications
Fulfilled the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution
(c) Key Competencies and Skills
Crisis management skills
Knowledge of budgeting
Good team player; and
Ability to work under pressure.
