Responsibilities

Undertake legal research and analysis and prepares legal opinions, studies, briefs, reports,indictments and correspondence to provide legal advice to the division.
Assist division staff in the drafting of United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) resolutions and legal documentation for other intergovernmental processes.
Review, advise on and draft complex contracts,agreements, institutional and operational modalities that are outside of the UN Environment template.
Review, advise on institutional and operational modalities that are outside of the UN Environment template.
Provide legal advice on host country agreements for conferences/workshops organized by Ecosystems Division, and the hosting of Regional Seas Convention and Action Plans Secretariats.
Serve as the legal officer for the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans, providing advice on the formulation, revisions and amendments to Conventions, Protocols and other legal instruments.
Provide legal advice on substantive and procedural question relating the Conference of the Parties (COP) and Intergovernmental meetings (IGM) for the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans administered by UN Environment.
Review as needed Regional Seas COP and IGM working and information documents, and provides advice on rules of procedure for COPs and IGMs.
Serve on various standing boards, committees, adhoc working groups and task forces, as required; promotes the work of the United Nations and represents the organization at meetings,conferences, seminars, etc.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Professionalism: Knowledge of international legal procedures and instruments, including environmental law; Ability to apply legal expertise to analyzing a diverse range of complex and unusual legal issues and problems and in developing innovative and creative solutions in dealing with environmental and marine issues; Strong analytical skills and ability to conduct comprehensive legal research on a range of issues; proficiency in legal writing and expression and ability to prepare legal briefs, opinions, and a variety of legal instruments and related documents; Discretion and sound judgment in applying legal expertise to sensitive, complex legal issues; Ability to work to tight deadlines and handle multiple concurrent projects; Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; Remains calm in stressful situations. Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in international, environmental or marine law is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in international law, including legal analysis, research and writing is required. Experience in international organizations is desirable. Knowledge of United Nations regulations, rules and procedures is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
