The Senior School of the Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi is an International Baccalaureate (IB) School and offers a holistic programme of education for students in grades 7-13,  (MYP1 –DP2) combining a rigorous academic focus with a broad range of athletic and enrichment activities for students. The Senior School offers the IB Middle Years Programme of Studies for students in grades 7-11 (MYP 1-5), blending the syllabus of the Cambridge IGCSE in grades 10 and 11 with that of the Middle Years’ Programme of Study. The Senior School also offers students entry into the IB Diploma Programme of Studies in grades 12 and 13.

 The Deputy Head works closely with the Senior Leadership Team and departments to develop and deliver strategy for the development of the IB programme within the School’s Strategic Plan and ensures the highest standards of teaching and learning throughout the School.


Key responsibilities include the following: 

  • Provide effective leadership in the development and successful implementation of the IB MYP programme in the school.
  • Serve as a member of the School Senior Leadership Team (SLT)
  • Ensure that the School Mission/Vision and IB Mission Statement are being carried out in all areas of the School program
  • Work to ensure the production of a timetable that meets the learning needs of students and the requirements of the IB Programme
  • Oversee the reporting process and work with the ManageBac Coordinator
  • In conjunction with the other SLT members and Department Heads, formally observe and evaluate faculty and staff
  • Encourage, inspire and challenge faculty continuously to develop more effective teaching and learning strategies and techniques as part of their continuous professional learning
  • Identify and facilitate faculty professional development opportunities
  • With the School SLT and faculty, develop appropriate rules and agreements that are aligned with the School’s Behavior Policy and which support the IB Learner Profile
  • Oversee the annual review of all policies and corresponding handbooks
  • Participate in the creation of and monitoring of the School Development Plan
  • With the Department Heads, contribute to the recruitment of teaching faculty, making recommendations to the Head Teacher
  • Work with the Student Services’ team to ensure that all students’ learning needs are documented and supported
  • Monitor the care and upkeep of all classroom areas including the school canteen.

The requirements

The Deputy Head Teacher will be expected to possess the following qualifications, experience and specific attributes: 

  • A Bachelor of Education degree
  • At least five years’ teaching experience in IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and/or Diploma Programme (DP), as well as MYP or DP leadership experience 
  • Understanding of 21st century education
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Experience in the developing world and in Africa will be highly desirable.
