Specific duties

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Design and implement research on modelling insect population density, dynamics, interactions, and risk of invasion and spread;
  • Link mathematical, biological and physical principles for assessing the present and predicting the future, as well as testing the models with experimental datasets;
  • Develop, apply and explore new computation methods for decision support for integrated pest and vector management practices and interventions, climate change impact and variability assessments;
  • Develop, adapt and implement tools for data basing and storage of institutional datasets;
  • Work closely with a team of entomologists in the experimentation and interpretation of models and outputs;
  • Strengthen the impact culture within the Centre through better articulating impact pathways to co-develop and use modelling tools;
  • Contribute to building capacity of national institutions through identifying and co-supervising (or mentoring) graduate students;
  • Publish and communicate research findings through internationally recognized forums (peer-reviewed journals), and contribute to the dissemination of research findings to stakeholders;
  • Have the ability to foster innovative work environment and appropriate skills in research governance.


  • PhD in applied mathematics with entomology or ecological modelling, or a discipline relevant to the skills listed above.
  • Perfect knowledge of advanced tools in data mining using intelligent algorithms.
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Ability to undertake capacity building at all levels.

Core Competencies

  • Proven high level of proficiency in a relevant programming language, especially C/C++ and R.
  • Strong experience in geographical information systems (GIS), spatial statistics, cellular automata (CA), and individual and agent based modelling (I/ABM) approaches.
  • Experience in ecological niche and phenology modelling approaches.
  • Experience in artificial neural networks (ANNs), fuzzy logic (FL), random forest (RF), and percolation theory applications.
  • Good knowledge of scenario analysis, climate change impacts assessment, and management of large datasets.
  • Good knowledge of the development and analysis of continuous and discrete differential equations.

Other desirable attributes

  • Excellent ability to supervise and mentor technical staff and students.
  • An effective, innovative, and energetic team player with ability to work in multidisciplinary and multiinstitutional teams in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Proven ability to generate additional funds for relevant research.
