Five pupils and a bus driver have died following an accident involving a school bus and truck in Kaburengu area along the Eldoret-Webuye highway in Kakamega County.

The Saturday evening comes barely three weeks after another accident occurred on the same road where four people lost their lives after a truck hit a motorcyclist and other three pedestrians.

The 18:15pm incident involved a school bus belonging to Ebenezer Complex Academy from Busia County where a truck carrying gravel lost control and rammed into the school bus pushing it off the road.

Report from Matete police officers indicate that four of the pupils and their driver died on the spot while another one died at Webuye Level Four Hospital where he was being treated.

The police said at least ten people including two teachers are admitted at Webuye Level Hospital with injuries.

The pupils and teachers were travelling back to Busia from Eldoret where the learners had gone for an academic trip.

Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula urged President Wiliam Ruto to intervene and order the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) to redesign the notorious road to avoid more deaths.

Webuye County Hospital where some of the pupils are nursing injuries and the wreckaged of the ill-fated school bus.

"It is just three weeks ago when we lost four people on the same road, I am urging our President to order KeNHA to redesign this road the way the Salgaa road was redesigned to have a dual carriage so that trucks can use their own lane separate from the rest of the vehicles," said Savula.

Savula said in one week's time the county government is going to relocate all traders doing their business along the road in efforts to avoid more deaths on the highway.

Busia Governor Paul Otuoma through his communication team condoled with the bereaved families and wished the survivors a quick recovery.

However, Police are looking for the driver of the truck who is alleged to have escaped from the scene.

The bodies of the deceased pupils and a driver have been taken to Webuye Hospital Mortuary.
