An elderly woman died after her house was allegedly set ablaze by her grandson.

The 80-year-old and her 40-year-old grandson are said to have quarrelled over the government's cash stipend for the elderly and vulnerable.

Following the Wednesday's 11pm incident at the Ebusoka Eshitimba village in Khwisero, Kakamega, the suspect is nursing injuries after residents attacked him.

Neighbours said the suspect has been treated for mental illness before.

Emily Matilda, a villager, said they first heard noise coming from the woman's home at about 9pm. When she rushed to the hone with her children, they found the suspect hurling stones at his grandmother's house.

"We tied him with ropes inside his house. When he appeared to have calmed down, we freed him. However, two hours later, we heard noise from the homestead again. We went out and spoke to the suspect. He calmed down once again and went to sleep," she said.

But on the third incident, they found the woman's house on fire.

"That was when angry residents descended on the suspect with kicks and blows. He was saved by the police," said Matilda.

Mary Okisa, a daughter of the victim, said the suspect was demanding to be the one to collect the old woman's stipend from the government, but the grandmother had refused.

Area OCPD Samwel Kogo said: "By the time our officers arrived at the home, the woman had already died. They, however, rescued the suspect who was being beaten up by neighbours. We will take him for mental check-up to see if he is of sound mind to stand trial."
