MP calls for immediate action over insecurity in Borabu constituency

Newsbeat & Tech

Borabu MP Patrick Osero has called for the immediate deployment of a special police unit to the area over escalating insecurity.

Osero says over the past few months, Borabu area in Nyamira County has witnessed a series of insecurity incidents that have put the lives and safety of his constituents at risk.

"It is disheartening to note that no arrests have been made in connection with these incidents. Most of these attacks appear to be taking the same trend where the criminals ambush families in their homes, stay almost the whole night while ransacking the houses, harassing their victims as they steal electronics and cash," he said.

The armed thugs also demand security pins and passwords of mobile phones so that they can access their victims' mobile banking platforms.

Recent incidents show that the terrified victims are then transported from their homes and dumped kilometres away where the criminal gives them a token of cash 'as transport back home'.

"We have fought cattle rustling in this area for years. A few criminal elements cannot purport to hold the security apparatus at ransom. They must be dealt with," said Osero.

Locals are also demanding the immediate transfer of two senior police officers from a local police divisional headquarters.

One of the officers was deployed to the area as a junior officer and has risen to the top rank in a period of nine years. The other senior officer is said to have served in the area for more than six years.

In a recent incident, thugs raided the home of a former Cabinet Secretary and injured her daughter-in-law.
