Prisoners feature in mock World Cup tourney

Kamiti Medium Security Prison fell 3-0 to Kamiti Maximum Security Prison in their opening match of the second edition of the Inter-Prisons mock World Cup tournament that started at the Kamiti Maximum Security Prison on Thursday.

The eight-team tournament will run concurrently with the 2022 Fifa World Cup that kicks off in Qatar tomorrow with the final set for December 18.

As part of their rehabilitation, the inmates are playing their own version of the football tournament, with teams named after the countries competing at the real competition.

The event is organised by Kenya Prisons Service in partnership with Kenya Premier League Ltd and Zebstrong Kenya.

Other teams participating in the tournament include Kamiti Youth Correctional Centre, Jamhuri Prison, Nairobi West Prison, Nairobi West Medium Prison, Nairobi Remand and Naivasha Prison.

Santos Okoth, Brian Otieno and Ibrahim Hassan scored a goal each for Kamiti Maximum Security Prison who have been nicknamed Ecuador against Kamiti Medium Security Prison nicknamed Qatar.

In other matches, Kamiti YCTC beat Kamiti Medium 2-0, Nairobi West Prison lost 0-3 to Kamiti Maximum, Kamiti YCTC beat Jamhuri 2-1 while Jamhuri were held to a barren draw by Nairobi West Prisons.

While handing over playing kits and balls to the participating teams in an event graced by KPL CEO Jack Oguda, Zebstrong CEO cum Bishop Joseph Kariuki said they are pleased to partner with the correctional facilities during the World Cup extravaganza. [Stafford Ondego]
