Covid-19: 120 in ICU as Kenya records 188 new cases

Kenya on Monday, July 12 recorded 188 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, from a sample of 2,354 raising the country's caseload to 188,942.

In a statement, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the new infections take the country’s positivity rate to 8.0 per cent and cumulated tests conducted so far to 2,018,942.

Out of the new patients, 102 are male, whereas 86 are female, with the youngest carrier aged two, and the oldest aged 85.

Of the new cases, 14 are foreigners while the rest are Kenyans.

Distribution

In terms of counties distribution, Nairobi recorded 128, Kiambu 10, Machakos 9, Siaya, Kwale and Nakuru 7 cases each, Embu, Kajiado and Muranga 3 cases each, Makueni and Uasin Gishu 2 cases each, Homa Bay, Laikipia, Kakamega, Nyeri and Mandera 1 case each.

In terms of sub-county distribution, the 128 cases in Nairobi are from Makadara (14), Ruaraka (12) Starehe (11) Kasarani (10), Embakasi East and Embakasi South (9) cases each, Embakasi Central and Kibra (8) cases each Roysambu and Westlands (7) cases each, Langata (6), Dagorett South, Kamkunji and Mathare (5) cases each, Dagoretti North, Embakasi West and Embakasi North (4) cases each.

In Kiambu, the 10 cases are from Ruiru (5), Kiambu town (2), Juja Kabete and Kikuyu (1) case each.

Kenya’s Covid-19 toll reached 3,723 after one patient succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours.

The total recoveries so far stand at 179,861 after 341 patients recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours with 250 from the Home-Based and Isolation care programme while 91 are from various health facilities in the country.

Of the total recoveries, 143,588 are from the Home Based Isolation Care programme while 36, 273 are from various hospitals countrywide.

A total of 1,072 patients are currently admitted to various health facilities countrywide, while 4,381 patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care.

One hundred and twenty (120) patients are in the ICU, 41 of whom are on ventilatory support and 59 on supplemental oxygen. Twenty (20) patients are on observation.

Another 223 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 201 of them in general wards and 20 in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

Vaccination

Kenya has at July 12, 2021 administered 1,547,092 vaccines across the country.

Of these, the total first doses are 1,028,121 while the second doses are 518,971.

The uptake of the second dose by Priority Groups is as follows: Aged 58 years and above 160,418, Others 146,936, Health Workers 98,901, Teachers 71,746 while Security Officers are at 40,970.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 50.2 per cent with the majority being males at 55 per cent while females are at 45 per cent. The proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 2.0 per cent.
