How to practice financial self-care

The word self-care makes me think of pampering, maintaining and healing. We love to have a little self-care time when it comes to beauty but today, we are flipping the script and talking about financial self-care.

I think that, even when you’re making good money, it helps to use it wisely to put yourself on the right path so that you don’t end up with irreversible bad choices.

This is how you can maintain a good relationship between you and money and avoid all the stress that come with lack of proper financial self-care.

  1. Get serious

No one is going to take you seriously if you don’t take yourself seriously in the first place. We all have a vision of what we’d want to be in future and it’s up to you to start that journey right now.

If you see yourself as an entrepreneur in future, start handling your money like a smart entrepreneur would. Before making purchases, ask yourself if that’s something you really need or want.

Keep in mind that adulting means that there’s no one to follow how you use your money except you. Start taking control of your finances as a soon as possible.

  1. Monitor your spending

When you don’t keep tabs on your spending habits, you’ll always find yourself wondering where all your money disappeared to.

You need to embrace the habit of writing down what you’ve spent your money on and do your calculations so that you can get the true perspective of your financial habits.

Do this weekly or as often as possible as you eliminate the things that have been wasting you all this time.

  1. Clear your debts

There’s nothing more stressful than being in debt. They hold you back financially and they can also bring along stress related health issues.

It’s always fun and dandy when you’re borrowing but the story usually changes when it’s time to pay back what you owe.

If you must take a loan, make sure it’s something you can manage to pay back because things could fall apart when you realize you’ve trapped yourself in loans you couldn’t afford.

  1. Set manageable goals

Having both long term and short-term goals is important for anyone who wants to attain financial freedom. It’s great to dream big but sometimes you can admit that you need to be realistic as well.

This will help you when creating a budget that’s sustainable and release you from the pressure of forcing yourself to attain certain goals when you’re not there yet.

Start with small manageable goals then continue to make adjustments.

  1. Leave your baggage behind

Everyone makes money mistakes. It’s just part of life.

The problem comes in when you keep criticizing yourself for the what-ifs. What’s gone is gone and the only way you can begin the recovery process is by looking ahead.

Do all you can to heal from the financial choices you’ve made in the past and if you’re showing signs of anxiety or depression, get some therapy.

Financial trouble is a very serious issue that affects people’s lives so don’t feel bad about needing some help to recover from the past.

  1. Reward yourself once in a while

Being healthy financially usually involves a lot of saving and investing. You basically sacrifice a lot in the present until you reach that point where you can enjoy the benefits of all you’ve been working for.

Still, there’s nothing wrong with rewarding yourself as you continue to commit yourself to your goals.

But this doesn’t mean that you should take that opportunity to spoil yourself with things that aren’t within your means.

Always keep it simple.
