Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) is now licenced to offer courses in nutrition and dietetics.

Kenya Nutrition and Dietetics Institute (KNDI) Accreditation Board awarded the university a licence to offer diploma programmes.

The board awarded the licence after a two-day inspection of the university's facilities. KNDI Accreditation Board Chairman Edward Karuri commended MMUST for scoring 91.8 per cent on compliance, the highest by any institution in the country.

"(The) score is a reflection of an improvement of the existing programme and an indicator of suitability and capacity of MMUST to mount the additional diploma programmes," Prof Karuri said.

The KNDI team said the research component at the MMUST's nutrition department had been strengthened and stressed the need for competence training.

The university also received the rights to be a National Centre of Excellence in Human Nutrition and Dietetics and it has also been granted the rights to be an Examination and Internship Centre for graduates in Clinical Nutrition and Clinical Dietetics.
