Manchester United appoint Michael Carrick as permanent head coach until 2028

Manchester United have confirmed Michael Carrick as their permanent head coach, signing the former England midfielder to a two-year deal that runs until 2028, with an option for a further season, according to Sky Sport.

The 44-year-old, who stepped in as interim boss in January, has been rewarded after guiding the club back into the Champions LeagueCarrick’s appointment follows a strong run of form: since taking charge after Ruben Amorim’s dismissal, he has overseen 11 victories in 16 matches.

‎According to ESPN that negotiations over his long-term role progressed smoothly; the brief delay in announcing the deal was largely due to talks about assembling his backroom team.

‎The Red Devils are finalising paperwork to retain key assistants Steve Holland and Jonathan Woodgate, keeping continuity in the coaching setup at Carrington.

Director of football Jason Wilcox praised Carrick’s impact, saying he has “thoroughly earned the opportunity to continue leading our men’s team.”

Wilcox highlighted both the improved results and Carrick’s management style, which he said aligns with the club’s values, traditions and history. 

He added that Carrick’s role in returning the club to the Champions League should not be underestimated and commended the winning culture developing within the squad.

‎Carrick expressed his pride at taking the job on a permanent basis, reflecting on his 20 years with the club. “From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United,” he said. 

“Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.” He praised the players for demonstrating resilience, togetherness and determination over the past five months and said the group now has “ambition and a clear sense of purpose.”

‎Next season Carrick will take charge of United without facing Pep Guardiola, who has confirmed his departure from Manchester City. 

United’s supporters will now hope Carrick will carry their flag way high.
