Covid-19: 15 die, 131 in ICU as Kenya records 323 new cases

Kenya on Sunday, July 17 recorded 323 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, from a sample of 3,676 raising the country's caseload to 192,758.

In a statement, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the new infections take the country’s positivity rate to 8.8 per cent and cumulated tests conducted so far to 2,053,912.

Out of the new patients, 180 are male, whereas 143 are female, with the youngest carrier aged one, and the oldest aged 90.

Of the new cases, 25 are foreigners while the rest are Kenyans.

Distribution

In terms of counties distribution, Nairobi 166, Mombasa 41, Kilifi 31, Busia 24, Nakuru 23, Kiambu 10, Machakos 5, Nyeri 3, Kwale 3, Meru 3, Kajiado 3, Kericho 2, Kirinyaga 2, Siaya 2, Uasin Gishu 2, Baringo 1, Isiolo 1 and Murang’a 1.

Kenya’s Covid-19 toll reached 3,775 after 15 patients succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours.

The total recoveries so far stand at 182,326 after 644 patients recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours with 604 from the Home-Based and Isolation care programme while 40 are from various health facilities in the country.

Of the total recoveries, 145,742 are from the Home Based Isolation Care programme while 36,584 are from various hospitals countrywide.

A total of 1,203 patients are currently admitted to various health facilities countrywide, while 4,384 patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care.

One hundred and thirty-two (132) patients are in the ICU, 40 of whom are on ventilatory support and 63 on supplemental oxygen. Twenty-nine (29) patients are on observation.

Another 272 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 250 of them in general wards and 22 in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

Vaccination

Kenya has at July 17, 2021, administered 1,620,465 vaccines across the country.

Of these, the total first doses are 1,038,074 while the second doses are 582,391.

The uptake of the second dose by Priority Groups is as follows: Aged 58 years and above 181,546, Others 166,549, Health Workers 106,218, Teachers 81,758 while Security Officers are at 46,320.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 56 per cent with the majority being males at 55 per cent while females are at 45 per cent. The proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 2.0 per cent.
