Health worker admitted as cases shoot to 9,726

Barely three days after the first doctor succumbed to Covid-19, the government has announced another healthcare worker is ill after contracting the virus.

The confirmation came as Health ministry announced that 278 more people had tested positive for the virus out of a sample of 1,403.

“Healthcare workers face the risk of contracting the coronavirus because they are exposed. Yes, I can confirm that one healthcare worker is critically ill,” said Director-General of Health Patrick Amoth, adding that the government was supporting the frontline workers through an insurance cover and allowances. Dr. Doreen Lugaliki, whom Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said was the first doctor to succumb to the virus, died on Friday.

Yesterday, the officials also appealed to church and mosque leaders to strictly follow an interfaith council protocol they had developed to protect worshippers, particularly the elderly and the sick, against Covid-19, as they gear up for the reopening of prayer houses to congregants.

Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Mercy Mwangangi told the interfaith council leaders to adhere to the rules they formulated so as to self-regulate their prayer sessions.

At the same time, three more people have died, bringing the Covid-19 fatalities to 184. Dr Mwangangi said 99 people had recovered from the virus, bringing the number of recoveries to 2,832.

Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya said said the county government had set aside Sh42 million as allowances for its healthcare workers.

He also said the county had intensified surveillance on the Kenya-Tanzania border at Lunga Lunga to ensure coronavirus positive individuals do not pass the virus to both sides of the border.

Kwale has had 139 positive cases since the beginning of the pandemic, but had no single patient in its isolation centres by yesterday.
