A breakdown of how healthcare workers will share the Sh3 billion welfare package from President Uhuru Kenyatta has been released by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

The breakdown contained in a letter to Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani from SRC Chairperson Lyn Mengich has listed three categories of payments.

The payments, which will last for three months with effect from April 1, will range between Sh5,000 and Sh20,000.

The letter is copied to Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, Public Service CS Margaret Kobia, Council of Governors Chairman Wycliffe Oparanya and Treasury Principal Secretary Julius Muia.

Doctors, dentists and pharmacists will go home with Sh20,000 each starting this month.

Clinical officers, nurses, medical lab technologists and technicians, biochemists, chemists, medical entomologists, medical parasitologists, medical lab officers, and physiotherapists fall in the second batch and will get Sh15,000 monthly.

The third batch has other technologists and technicians in public health, dental, pharmaceutical, orthopaedic trauma, medical engineering nutrition and dietetics and will receive Sh10,000.

Other paramedics who fall in this category are community health officers, community health assistants, health promotional officers, health records and information management officers, health records and information management assistants.

Medical benefits

Others in this category include medical social workers, nutrition and dietetics officers, occupational therapists, public health officers, radiation officers, radiographers, mortuary attendants and drivers deployed in hospitals.

Support staff will get Sh5,000 and these include cleaning supervisors, support staff (senior I, II and III) and boiler assistants.

“The allowance is payable for a period of three months with effect from April 1, 2020 subject to availability of funds,” reads the letter dated April 28, 2020.

The commission says medical benefits will be provided for as per the SRC advisory, and subject to availability of funds. Healthcare workers are under the National Hospital Insurance Fund comprehensive care.

“Other insurance benefits under Work Injury Benefits Act, Group Personal Accident and Group Life Insurance to be addressed by the Ministry of Public Service and Gender who will give further guidance in consultation with respective stakeholders as per proposals,” says Mengich.
