A 23-year-old mother of one was elated and shocked after she delivered triplets at a Kiambu hospital.

Sarah Njeri delivered between midnight and 1am on Saturday night at Kijabe Hospital.

Ms Njeri told The Standard that although she was overjoyed, she was taken aback because she did not expect to get three more children.

“I visited Naivasha District Hospital two weeks ago, and after going for a scan I found out I was carrying twins. I was not expecting a third one and I am still in shock,” she said.

But her husband, it appears, is even more shocked.

According to Njeri, after he received news that she had given birth to triplets, he went silent and is yet visit her and the children in hospital. She appealed to well-wishers to help her raise the babies.

“I have no source of income and my husband whom I have been depending on has neglected me. I desperately need babies’ clothes and food,” she said.

HUGE SURPRISE

The delivery came as a huge surprise to her family too because it has no history of multiple births.

Njeri gave birth to two boys weighing 1.9kg and 1.7kg and a girl weighing 1.5kg. She said although the triplets were a blessing, she has no resources to look after them.

Medical Director and paediatrician at the hospital Mardi Steere said this was the first time that triplets have been born at the institution.

Dr Steere said a team of highly trained paediatricians, obstetricians, midwives, doctors and nurses burnt the midnight oil to ensure safe delivery of the babies.

Njeri delivered prematurely at eight months.

“I had to deliver prematurely, one boy was delivered normally while a girl and a boy were delivered through caesarean section,” she said.

Njeri recounted the pain she went through before she ended up at Kijabe Hospital. “When labour persisted, I visited Naivasha District Hospital only to find doctors there on strike. I later visited two private hospitals but they declined to serve me, saying they had no capacity to deliver the babies.

“I was rushed by an ambulance to this hospital after I went into labour,” she said.
