A prolific team comprised of home golfer Lucy Njuguna and Nancy Muraya, Nancy Mugo, both of Sigona Golf Club, fired a total of 91 stableford points to lift the 2022 Limuru Ladies Invitation Golf Tournament held at Limuru Country Club on Friday.

At the same time, home player Francis Kimani carded 40 points to bag the men's subsidiary of the event.

"It was a good day, I'm happy about the victory. The win is a great way to start the year," Kimani said.

Mugo, who captained her winning side, praised her team-mates for playing their roles effectively in their respective batches.

"It's an honour to play here in this prestigious event. We had a wonderful day on the pitch. We teed-off very early at 7am, that was such a hustle but we are glad we made it," she said.

"The course was a bit of a challenge, the greens were very fast, despite that we really enjoyed the game."

While promising to defend the trophy next season, Mugo stated:" We are hopeful that we will succeed because of the unity we have in our relationship. We have known each other for five years."

Muraya's greatest challenge was the 'ungodly' hour they teed-off.

"I have never played that much early in my life, despite the challenge we still managed to beat a large field, that included young players, to emerge victorious," noted Muraya.

Njuguna said they had vowed to win the championships this season after they emerged runners-up last year.

The trio first met in 2018 in Portugal where they got to know each other so well.

A year later, they were together for the African circuit challenge in Zambia where they won gold and silver.

"We work for an international firm, so we meet and travel alot while playing golf in pristine courses in Africa and Europe.

"I can say it's the love of golf and true friendship that has held us together for this long," said Mugo.

A head of every tournament, every team member practises and play on their own to step up training for the event they have registered for.

"We are always hopeful that everyone has trained enough to play well to give us good points," Mugo said.

"Winning is great, it's a plus, but the best thing is to come out here, be healthy, be able to play golf with your friends. I think this is more important than victory. Winning is not everything," Mugo adds.

Among the benefits, the team has enjoyed while playing golf together includes fitness, networking and meeting new friends.

Limuru Lady Captain, Kezie Karuoro-Kihara thanked the Standard Group PLC for coming on board to support the tournament that attracted 100 men and 150 women.

"The purpose of the championships is to bring the lady golfers from all over the country together. Limuru ladies are allowed to invite two friends each from other clubs to come and play," she said.

"We appreciate taking part in the event as sponsors. Next weekend we will still be here to support the Chairman's Prize," Standard Group PLC CEO Orlando Lyomu said.

Standard Group Chief of Staff, Laban Cliff, said the sponsorships fits within the pillars of Standard Group as a home of sports.

"Our coming on board encourages the ladies to embrace the game. Standard Group expects to hold more golf tournaments in Nakuru, Kitale, Nanyuki among other counties."
