Why 'genius' Mesut Ozil will prove Arsenal doubters wrong - Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger believes Mesut Ozil's hunger to play football again must be "enormous" for him to force through a transfer to Fenerbahce this month.

The 32-year-old has been frozen out at Arsenal this season and looks set to complete his free transfer to the Turkish club in the coming days.

Ozil's representatives have been working on an agreement with Arsenal chiefs so the midfielder could cut short his contract, which was due to end in the summer.

There is plenty of pressure on Ozil now to perform at Fenerbahce, who he has supported since he was a child, and his former boss Arsene Wenger feels everything is in place there for him to be a success.

"I'm sure that he's frustrated at not having played. His hunger must be absolutely [enormous] to play football again," Wenger told beIN SPORTS.

"Mesut is a guy who needs a warm environment and I believe he will find that more than anywhere else in Turkey. Overall, he can provide the balls that the strikers need to win football games. If they do that well, they have a good chance of winning the league.

Ozil's struggles at Arsenal really began when Wenger left the club in 2018.

Up till that point the he had been a regular in the Gunners' side, though his form had started to decline.

Neither Unai Emery nor Mikel Arteta have been able to incorporate Ozil into their side's as question marks over his commitment clouded his final years in north London.

Wenger is in no two minds about the qualities Ozil possesses, though, comparing him to an "orchestra" for the timing of his passes and labelling him a creative "genius".

And he expects his former charge to get up to speed at Fenerbahce sooner rather than later.

"If his basic fitness in training is good, it will only take him three or four games to be at his best," Wenger added.

"The quality that he has is … vision in depth. He sees quickly, he decides quickly and he realises quickly what he sees. That is a quality you don't find too often in our game."
