Inside the Chuka University Plant Science laboratories are experts and specialists dressed in white lab coats matching gloves and facemasks busy conducting soil testing to know which soils need what type of fertilizers for them to be more productive. The main aim of the project is to promote agri-business within Tharaka Nithi County and increase the amount of food produced. The project, according to Dr. Jafford Njeru who is the director in charge of the university farm, is aimed at educating farmers to have the knowhow on their soil pH which enables them to be properly advised on what fertilizers to apply.

The institution receives on average 245 samples and depending on the Bluetooth connectivity, they are in a position to test on average 30 samples. They are using university radio to reach more farmers. Normally the scanning charges range from between Sh1,000 and Sh2,000 per soil sample, with the University taking up the cost for the first two years as part of the institution’s corporate social responsibility.
