Some residents of Yimbo East and Central Sakwa wards in Bondo who have been grappling with unsteady supply of water can now breathe easy, thanks to a Sh24 million project expected to alleviate their suffering.

The county government and the World Bank have constructed two water pans, each costing Sh12 million, and are expected to supply residents with water both for domestic use and irrigation.

Siaya Deputy Governor James Okumbe, who spoke at Kamola water pan in Yimbo East ward while launching the project, thanked the World Bank for supporting the county, noting the water pans will make nearby villages enjoy water sufficiency.

He said they have initiated similar projects in other parts of the county.

“With the effects of climate change, what we need most is water and these projects have come in handy. At least our people will have water for domestic use and irrigation,” said Okumbe.

Elsewhere, more than 300 people who gave up their land for Lower Nzoia River Irrigation Project will be compensated before the end of the year, the government has announced.

The project, awarded to China's hydroelectric engineering and construction company, Sinohydro, will cost Sh7 billion.

On Friday, Nyanza Regional Commissioner Magu Mutindika noted that the National Land Commission was yet to compensate the 344 local land owners.

“So far none of the land owners has been paid but we’ve got an assurance from the land commission that they’ll be paid by December 24 to pave way for the contractor to do the work,” said Mutindika, who spoke while on a tour of the project.
