Proper cleaning and sanitization of the bathroom is key as this room is the least hygienic in any household considering its purpose.

Most people certainly attest to growing up with bathroom routines with little knowledge that some of these habits can be the cause of their deteriorating health.

With the insight below, we can be able to minimize any health issues caused by some common ‘harmful’ bathroom habits

Forgetting to close the toilet lead when flushing

I know most if not all of us have fallen short and left our toilet lids up while flushing.

It is important to always do the former as during flushing the contents of the toilet can splutter via a spray that's sent into the air.

This is packed with microscopic bacteria causing germs that can spread to your hands, bathroom floor and walls.

Taking our phones to the bathroom

Even though you're in the middle of an amazing conversation, want to write a private message or are just enjoying checking your mails and Twitter feed, doing it in the toilet is a no-no.

Being somewhat addictive, this is one of the habits most people are doing unaware of the dire implication of their actions to their health. Germs can easily be transmitted from the toilet to your phone.

If your phone is not cleaned thoroughly then it can lead to other diseases including upset stomach or a running stomach as you are constantly touching your phone and hardly washes your hand after using it.

Try as much as possible to go to the loo phoneless or with no tangible objects be it a book or puzzle. If you decide to go to the toilet with any of the items, disinfect them after going to the toilet.

Not washing your hands after going to the toilet

Washing hands is a golden rule to staying germ-free. It should be done slowly to effectively kill germs.

A mistake people do is going to the toilet and not washing their hands at all or washing them hurriedly.

Washing of hands should be done in warm water and soap for a minimum of 20 to 30 seconds.

You can a nail brush, or even an old a toothbrush, to scrub your nails that might have harboured any kind of germs.

Using bar soaps

Most families attest to using a bar soap as their cleaning agent in the bathroom.

This solid cleaning substance has so much bacteria as it is touched by so many people while cleaning.

Most bar soaps get contaminated when they are used by many people thus becoming a breeding ground for germs.

It is recommended to use liquid formulas as they dissolve easily and only one person can come into contact with it at any one time.

Not changing towels regularly

Leaving bathroom towels for too long creates an environment for germs to live in.

To control the spread of germs, it is recommended that you do a change of towels every week or after three days for a clean and hygienic bathroom.

Avoid these mistakes like a plague and lower your hospital visits.
