Cops now using NTSA vehicles to extort

Living

Police officers are using cars transferred to the Kenya Police Service by the National Transport and Safety Authority to extort business operators in the transport industry.

The officers masquerade as NTSA officials, demanding hefty bribes from matatus, lorries, and trucks, whom the police believe have liquid cash, to bribe their way out.

The 45 vehicles were initially leased to the NTSA by State House for use on road operations before former President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the authority to leave the manning of Kenyan roads to traffic police following public outcry of bullying and extortion.

State House later transferred the vehicles to the Kenya Police Service to boost security operations in the country. However, KPS saw an opportunity that would be exploited by keeping the NTSA green and white colours so that they would use the vehicles to extort vulnerable Kenyans while masquerading as NTSA officials.

"Traffic police take as little as Sh50 and may charge a maximum of Sh10,000," a matatu driver who was arrested by NTSA for having a tampered speed governor said.

A source at the Interior Ministry confirmed that the extortion racket involved senior officials.

"You know the traffic fines are exorbitant, and many fear ending up in court."

According to the NTSA, motorists exceeding speed limits are expected to pay fines ranging from Sh500 to Sh10,000.
