Jesy Nelson bared her soul as she admitted she used to starve herself in the hope of pleasing other people.

The former Little Mix star was subjected to years of horrific online abuse after joining the band on X Factor.

The 29-year-old even opened up in her heartbreaking documentary Odd One Out about how she felt so low at one point she tried to take her own life.

Now, she's channeling her energy into helping and inspiring others who might be struggling with their mental health and worrying too much about how others see them.

Jesy, who announced last year she was quitting the band, revealed that she starved herself until she could fit into size 8 clothes, but that even then, she wasn't happy.

The star shared an emotional-looking picture of herself lying on the floor of a gym next to a treadmill wearing black cycling shorts and a cropped top.

She appeared to be upset as she held her hand over her eyes.

Jesy's ribs are visible in the image that she shared with her fans on Instagram.

She wrote alongside it: "I just saw this picture pop up on my feed and it made me feel so sad. On the day this picture was taken, I remember going to the gym with my manager and I stood in the mirror and I said, ‘god I’m so fat I just want my legs to be like this’ and I pulled my skin around to try and create a thigh gap because I genuinely believed that being skinny would make me happier.

"And even when I got to a size 8 from starving myself, I still wasn’t happy. I mentally bullied myself everyday to try to please other people. It’s taken me 10 years to realise that I’m the only person I need to please."

She went on: "As humans we find it so easy to pay other people compliments but yet we find it so hard to be kind to ourselves because it’s so much easier to pick ourselves apart than to find the things we love about ourselves.

"So if you’re someone who is feeling like I was, please don’t waste years of your life seeking approval from others, seek approval from yourself. Be your number one fan. You are the one in control of your happiness and you are the only one of you in this world and that’s pretty f**king powerful!"

She was showered with praise for speaking out.

Geordie Shore's Holly Hagan told her: "You are and always have been incredible Jesy. From day 1"

"This is it," fellow X Factor star Alexandra Burke shared.

While one follower posted: "The most beautiful and inspiring person I know I am so proud of you...you are more special than you will ever know"

And another wrote: "Speak on it queen!! Thank you so much for being a inspiration for us all"
