Valentine's Day gifts you should never get your partner if you're trying to impress

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and time is running out to find your significant other the perfect gift.

With romantic gestures being important to many, it is hard to know the best gift to buy your lover in a bid to woo them.

Whether you're in a new relationship or a long term one, Valentine’s Day presents are important and can either lead to grand displays of gratitude or an argument.

To help anyone lacking inspiration Veritas Gifts, the royally appointed gifting specialists, have provided a list of Valentine’s Day gifts to avoid buying for the King or Queen of your heart.

Celebrity Fragrances

Celebrity perfumes are at the bargain end of the perfume spectrum and although they might be appealing if you know your significant other loves David Beckham or Britney Spears, celebrity scents tend to lack the strength and appeal of classic designer brands.

The advice from Veritas is: “If you wish to buy a scent then opt for designer brands such as Chanel or Michael Kors and try and see what their perfume taste is like first.

"Scents can have big differences such as floral or aromatic so ensure you know this before you purchase.”

Household Appliances

It is difficult to see the romantic allure of a new toaster or kettle.

The thought counts but the thought when buying your beau a Valentine’s Day gift should be romantic and sensual, not practical.

Of the large variety of gifts that are synonymous with Valentine’s Day, household appliances are not and for good reason. Few people would choose a new blender over a thoughtful piece of jewellery.

Veritas warn against buying the apple of your eye anything for the household, especially if you’ll end up using it more than them.

“If you have to buy a household appliance, ensure that it is for them instead of you, there’s nothing worse than using the present yourself moments after gifting it”.

Cheap Chocolate

Sometimes less is more but when it comes to quality, this isn’t always the case.

Cheap chocolate is notoriously bad and will leave a nasty taste in the mouth of your significant other.

Veritas say to avoid “cheap and tacky” supermarket own brands and to instead opt for classic big names like Lindt, Cadbury’s and Thornton’s.

Big brands tend to release themed chocolates in time for the big day too so look out for heart-shaped chocolates and strawberry and cream flavoured versions of your partner’s favourites.

Novelty Jewellery

Jewellery is a great gift when selected with caution but many of us are getting it wrong.

Veritas say loved up Brits should avoid buying anything that isn’t classic and versatile.

The gift selectors have said: “Shops are filled with seasonal Valentine’s gifts which are specific to the day but try not to fall into the trap of buying a ring with a big red heart on or a slogan necklace which professes your love. Chances are, it will get hidden away after February”.

Instead, buy jewellery which matches the individual taste of the recipient and make sure that the gift can be worn throughout the year, not just on Valentine’s Day.

Last minute flowers

Flowers are a welcome gift to many but they have to be fresh and full of life - flowers bought from a supermarket at the last minute are unlikely to be either according to Veritas.

"Last minute flowers always look that way. As the shops are filled with people who have left it late, there won’t be as much choice left."

The gifting experts also add that flowers bought at the last minute are likely to wilt faster and the symbol of your love dying within a few days of purchase is clearly not the message anyone wants to send on this special day.

Instead, plan your Valentine’s Day gift well in advance and be sure to pay attention to your significant other’s favourite flower so that you can buy accordingly.

Instead, opt for items “the recipient can put to good use”.

Gym Membership

A gym membership as a gift for any occasion is risky but on Valentine’s Day when the intention is to celebrate your partner and make them feel desired, gifting them a gym membership leaves room to cause offence even if given innocently with good intentions.

Veritas say shoppers should run a mile from buying gym memberships this year: “If your recipient has been complaining about their diet, don't take this as an excuse to purchase a gym membership but instead, cook a dinner which is healthy so you can both enjoy it and endure the new lifestyle together.”

Unwanted Trinkets

Veritas also advise against buying any of the novelty items that major retailers have in stock during the run up to the big day.

The expert gifters suggest buying more meaningful and useful gifts instead of teddy bears, mugs and other branded merchandise: “It can be easy to get carried away when you’re shopping for presents, the shops are filled with seasonal trinkets but just how useful are they?”
