Environmental pollution is ever-increasing. We are slowly killing our planet. This is our only home but our daily activities are impacting the Earth horribly. Not long ago, the beautiful Amazon Forest was up in flames, and today, parts of Australia are ablaze. These fires impact planet Earth as a whole, and next, you and me, will have no home.

By adopting a ‘green’ lifestyle, we can slowly lessen the damage that we have already caused to the planet, and make the world hospitable for future generations. Sustainability will save you a lot of money over time, and at the same time make the world a better place. Below are five changes you can make today that will save you money and save the planet.

  1. Wash clothes when the laundry is plenty

Avoid washing small piles of clothes frequently throughout the week to reduce the amount of water and electricity you typically use to do laundry. Even if you’re handwashing your clothes, the amount of water you would need to use on one big pile of clothes compared to many small piles will be less. This slight reduction in water, electricity and detergents will save you plenty of money over time and benefit the environment.

  1. Unplug your devices

Lower your electricity bill and reduce pollution today by unplugging your devices and the charger from the socket after they have charged. Keeping devices plugged in long after they have charged is a waste of electricity because the devices continue using electricity even when the battery is full. You can apply this same change to light switches by switching them off whenever you walk out of a room.

  1. Improve your commute

Public transport is not a widely preferred method of transport for many people around the world. Personal vehicles are cleaner and a lot less congested. However, whenever possible, use public transport. Walk or cycle to get around. This reduces the number of cars on the road, thus reducing air pollution.

In addition to this, line up most of your errands into one day to reduce the number of car trips you would need to take on different days. This will reduce the amount of money spent commuting immensely.

  1. Get rid of plastic

Invest in a reusable water bottle to avoid repurchasing plastic bottles of water. Plastic bottles actually contain plastic toxins which are bad for your health. There is currently a plastic bag ban throughout Kenya- a great way to encourage citizens to use reusable shopping bags. Whenever you can, substitute plastic for a reusable alternative.

  1. Reduce your spending

Imagine all the things that you’ve bought over the past few years that you never even needed. Picture the transportation costs, delivery costs, packaging, and even time wasted on attainting those items. All those things combined, negatively affect the environment and your pockets.

Be more mindful of your spending and mainly buy things that you absolutely cannot be without. You will slip up every now and then, but when you are more aware of your spending habits, you will be on track most of the time.
