Three reasons why your lips are chapped

Beauty

There’s something really attractive about soft, luscious lips. Could it be because of the constant advertisement form makeup companies, or is it a societal thing? Everyone loves to have their lips soft and full of life.

So, you’ve drunk litres of water and gone through tubs of petroleum jelly but your lips are perpetually chapped. This is why your lips are chapped:

1.The weather

The weather has a great influence on your body's functions. During periods of low humidity, the air is dry. This can cause your lips to dry. Moreover, during very humid periods, you sweat a lot living your body dehydrated. This causes your lips to dry.

2.Excessive licking of lips

You might think that by licking your lips constantly you're moisturising them. But you are actually doing the opposite. The saliva on your tongue strips your lips of moisture and the more you do it, the more moisture you lose.

3. Medication

Certain medication will dry your lips as a side effect. This would usually resolve itself after the dose is complete. But if the symptoms persist and the lips begin to crack and even bleed it is advisable that you talk to your doctor.

How to treat and prevent chapped lips

a. Chapped lips are easily treated at home. Make sure that your lips have enough moisture. This can be accomplished by applying lip balm throughout the day, drinking more water, using a humidifier at home or wrapping your mouth with a scarf during the cold season.

b. Excessive exposure to the sun can also cause dry your lips, especially as you age. Apply a lip balm that contains a minimum SPF 15 before heading outdoors. The balm helps to moisturize the lips and the sunscreen minimizes further drying.

c. Exfoliate your lips once a week with a sugar scrub. This can help in getting rid of the dead skin on your lips. Mix a teaspoon of sugar, honey and lemon. Apply the mixture to your lips, leave it for 3 minutes, then gently exfoliate and rinse. You can then apply a lip balm that is rich in moisture or petroleum jelly.
