Ladies, let’s keep this real! We all know by now that one of the most lucrative businesses right now is on cosmetics and other ladies’ products like clothes, jewelleries, shoes…the list is endless. I was watching the launch of yet another news product for ladies on KTN’s Skin Therapy show yesterday.
Necessity is the mother of invention and true to the word, there was something missing in the market that necessitated the discovery of this particular product. From hand lotions to hair food and conditioners but apparently, something was missing in the market and thus, something new was introduced though in actual sense, there are many other similar products already.
Now that the painted picture is clear, let’s get into it shall we… The most amazing thing about all this is that ladies won’t stop at anything in fact will go beyond their budget just to have the latest in the market be it shoes, hair products, clothes, skin care products and so on. All this is good, have what is trending, look fashionable and modern.
There is however, a tiny little issue with all this. I know some will agree but majority won’t. Looking beautiful on the outside is never enough! Let’s take skin products as an example, ladies spend more on this. The need to look prettier than everyone else has become a norm.
When skin lightening products found their way here, the rush for them was almost like the rush for gold if my history class memory serves me right! One day you are walking in the streets of Nairobi then all over sudden you meet a friend from back in the days who used to be darker than you then you almost pass them by but something just clicks and you are sure you have seen them somewhere but you can’t quite recall where.
Then in that moment, they stop to say hi and it is then that you recall them except for the transformation. They’ve become almost ‘mzungu’ like.
Should we stop taking care of our skin, no! Should we stop using these ‘nice’ products in the market to help us look younger, more prettier and trendy, no!
What is the point in all this?
What we should do is focus more on the inner beauty that lasts longer. There is something about inner beauty (which I believe men find most attractive), that just makes a woman more beautiful even on the outside. Inner beauty that regardless of how the outside may be, a woman is still attractive.
Let’s go religious for a second. Did you know that even in the Bible, inner beauty is considered more attractive? Did you just doubt that? Ok, let’s see… 1st Peter 3:3-4
3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.
4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.
Please don’t get me wrong on this one, I am not in any way suggesting that we neglect our physical appearance, no! The point here is one, pay more attention to the inner beauty which is simply a gentle and quiet spirit.
This is more pleasing to God and I believe to men as well. The next time you are using a particular product, could you possibly pose for a moment and ask yourself whether your inner self is beautiful before beautifying the physical or if you like the outward self? Mirror, mirror on the wall…
