The many dos and don't dos revellers need to keep in mind this season

Living

festivitiesWe are on the final stretch of the year 2014.

The jubilation the world over is up surging towards its optimum with everyone pregnant with expectation of good fortunes coming their way in the new year.

It is that time of the year when employees from most companies take their annual leave and schools are on recess. Majority are visiting kinsmen at the countryside for the first time in the year. For the majority, it will be the most comfy and opportune moment to unwind, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Due to the influx of people moving to the rural areas, bus companies are taking advantage of this, to charge exorbitant bus fares. Every celebration and effort to make merry has its aftermath; both positive and negative.

There are dos and don't dos revellers need to keep in mind. On the dos; firstly, the end of year celebrations come with many responsibilities that translate into a strain on the wallet. The realisation only hits some people's minds once the celebrations are over.

Ensure you meet your basic necessities before everything else. These include food, clothing, housing and also, education. Impulse buying is rife during the December festivities and this can only be overcome through coming up with a strict budget and self-discipline. Given that schools reopen immediately after the festivities, it will be more prudent to set aside money for school fees, before thinking of partying. Be sure to prioritise your house rent –this should be the first expense to be met as soon as you earn your salary, more so this December.

There are lots of idle minds looking for money to make merry hence the rise in crime, especially car-jackings. Book your taxi in advance or to a known individual or company to avoid falling prey to rogue cab drivers. Most people posing as cab drivers may not actually be who they appear to be.

Don't drink yourself silly. The aftermath of careless drinking is grave, ranging from bodily harm, embarrassment, loss of job and even death.

If you must drink, don't drive. Get a designated driver; alternatively, you could go for a taxi. In addition, for the night revellers and especially those ladies who wish to have one drink or two. Ensure you do it in the company of a trusted male companion. Rape cases have been on the rise.

Insecurity has persistently continued to blossom. Terrorists are likely to take advantage of the festivities to extend their heinous acts. Crowded areas will be the soft spots on most occasions. If possible, try as much as you can to keep away from the crowded areas.

Feasting is akin to festivities; Christmas and New Year celebrations are no exception. To avoid cases of food poisoning be sure to know the source of your food.
