Behind every bachelor lies a mean woman

Living

If you came across an unmarried man past the age of 32, then there is an ungrateful, unforgiving, inconsiderate, self-loving damsel in his life, said my friend Sam.

I was tempted to contest this chauvinistic, intolerant sentiment but he gave me a heart-wrenching story of his elder brother who at the age of 36 has swore never to come near women.

His brother Simone had been dating this woman for five years. After his employer transferred him to the Berlin, Germany office, he thought it was better and wise to take things between him and Suzzanne a notch higher.  He proposed to Suzzanne who gladly accepted his marriage proposal.

“It was his biggest moment… he looked forward to marriage life.”

Soon after their engagement in April 2006, Simone flew off to Berlin to look for a house and get the hang of his new duties. He had hoped to come back and take Suzzanne with him after three months.

They planned to return home that December to wed. “It was something we all looked forward to.” Both considered wise that Suzzanne moves in with him since keeping two houses was considered uneconomical.

“He would call us as often … after so many years of dating, Suzzanne was like a sister and she would come over to our home for days. Our mother loved her. I guess she came over then for reassurance.” All went well for weeks until Sam received a call from Simone.  “My brother sounded really low. He was not himself.” Suzzanne had threatened to call off their engagement. Unbeknown to him, some friends of Suzzanne had “exposed the not-so-rosy life” that Simone had led before the engagement.

Against persuasion from Simone, Suzzanne was unwilling to listen his side of the story.

And his willing to engage her and not the others was not enough reason to sway her “despite the revelations bordering on untruths.”  For Simone, many things were happening; he was under work pressure; he was finding it hard to settle in the new culture in Germany; he was lonely and Suzzanne was not making it any better. He almost went berserk. “He had held on thinking that the strain was caused by the distance between them.”

Simone and Suzzanne’s telephone conversations became shouting matches. And Simone called home less. This weighed heavily on him. His homesickness got the better of him. He lost weight. At work, he was withdrawn.

Unable to bear it anymore, he resigned and came back home.  Nothing had prepared him for what awaited him in Nairobi.

When Simone went to his house, he was not met by Suzzanne. Something worse awaited him.
