Mercy Wanjau. [Jonah Onyango, Standard]

The nominee for the Secretary to the Cabinet position, Mercy Wanjau, worked at the Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) for over 20 years.

Ms Wanjau, a lawyer, acted as the director-general for two years before outgoing Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru appointed Ezra Chiloba.

She also served as CA assistant director, Regulatory and Governance between 2002 and 2017. She was then promoted to director, Legal Services.

The nominee started her law studies at the University of Nairobi, before proceeding for master's degree at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

She has also undertaken courses in leadership and telecommunications regulations.

Ms Wanjau has served a trustee at the SOS Children's Villages and as board chairperson at the CPS Governance Centre Ltd. She also sat at the Institute of Certified Secretaries council between 2017 and 2020.

Among other duties, she served in a task force appointed to review broadcasting regulations in 2015.

She now joins a long list of people from Kirinyaga to have served in top government positions including Geoffrey Kariithi, who served as Head of the Civil Service and Secretary to the Cabinet in the Jomo Kenyatta's era, and former Director of Intelligence James Kanyotu.

Other ares former Director of National Intelligence Service Michael Gichangi, former State House Comptroller Matere Keriri and Stanley Murage, an advisor at the State House in President Mwai Kibaki's regime.
