I learnt the hard way the need to protect my ideas

My husband and I learnt about the importance of IP law the hard way. When we first got into the business of creating online content, we did not know that we needed to protect it.

Then as the business grew in popularity, some people began using our pictures and content to sell products on their online platforms.

Usually when someone does, that alert Multi-Channel Networks (MCN) and they will take down the offender’s content if they showed it on YouTube.

If on Instagram, you can make a complaint to the management and the offender’s content will be taken down.

We have had a situation where a person on Facebook was using our son’s images to sell their products and when we asked them to stop, they were not compliant.

So we sought the services of a lawyer. After that, we realised that we needed to claim the IP rights for our content. We are currently talking to a lawyer and in the process of getting copyright for all our content.

So far, the process has not been cumbersome or even time consuming; all you need to do is get a lawyer who specialises in IP and ensure that you can prove that you are the owner of the content you are claiming ownership over.
