Where have the good house girls gone?

By Mom-In-Chief

“Is it me or them?” “Who is the bad one?” This is the question I have been grappling with for the last one month. Apparently, it seems my house girls cannot last for more than three months.

If my Math is right, the last best house girl I had was one Chebet who lasted almost two years.

Since then it has been turbulence after turbulence. I have had a variety of girls that I had no option but to fire.

First was Fatuma who was super clean and kept the house spotless, but she never got along with Tasha who was four months then. I don’t know whether she used to pinch the baby, but somehow the little one cried endlessly every time I handed her over to Fatuma. Because they did not connect I had to release her within two weeks.

Hopelessly lazy

Then came Sophie. She was good with the baby, but hopelessly lazy and untidy. She could leave Tasha with one diaper the whole day with no change of clothes. Her uncleanliness got out of control; she had to go within a month.

Finally my prayers were answered in the form of one Chebet. She was everything a working mother would want in her domestic help.

Talk of clean; she was super tidy, talk of baby skills; Tasha adored her to the point that I was jealous.

On the kitchen front she was a genius of a chef. She could whip up some delicacies; I was amazed. When it came to respect, she oozed of so much respect that could only be rivaled by a Ugandan lady. This girl was just God-sent. With her in charge, I knew I could go for a two-week out of town seminar  without worrying about baby’s well being. She gave me a peace of mind. She put me in such a comfort zone, I knew I would last with her for years. But no! The cruise only lasted two years. Looks like some watchman had also noticed her motherly and wifely characteristics and made her pregnant. When I discovered she was expectant, she was so guilty; she was willing to abort the feotus just to appease me.

But painful as it was, I had to release her in her second trimester. And since I released Chebet, I have never found rest. So I am just wondering where have the good house helps gone?
