The world’s largest fan-voted 2018 American Music Award (AMA) ceremony took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Tuesday night.
These award ceremonies always have a star of the show who stands out for various reasons. The 2018 AMAs spotlight belonged to Taylor Swift as she made her first award show performance in three years.
The Bad Blood singer kicked off her performance with her new song I Did something Bad from her Reputation album.
Taylor has been politically vocal particularly during this mid-term election season in the USA. Her very elaborate Instagram post two days before inspired an increase in registered voters by 65,000 only 24 hours later.
During her acceptance speech for the artiste of the year, Swift said: “Every single award given out tonight was voted for by the people, and you know what else was voted by the people? It is the mid-term elections, get on and vote.”
In addition to the love she was already receiving for the performance and being politically vocal, she broke Whitney Houston’s record for the most AMAs won by a female artiste.
Taylor wasn’t the only one who encouraged voting as actress and comedian Tracee Ellis Ross also wore a slogan tee at some point during the show which read: “I am a voter.” This being her second time hosting the award show, the Emmy award nominee did not disappoint when she gave an epic dance performance made up of all female dancers.
She was dressed in a sequin figure hugging Black Panther suit, and her dancers wore jumpsuits with slogans on them. Even her choice of songs she danced to are political.
Despite having the most nominations, Drake did not win in any of the categories he was nominated in, neither did he show up. Someone else who did not show up was Nicki Minaj.
This was going to be the first time Nicki Minaj and Cardi B would meet in public after their fight at the New York Fashion Week.
Cardi had hurled a shoe at Nicki when she was held back by bodyguards from physically fighting her. As much as Nicki was invited, she had no compelling reason to show up to the award ceremony as she was neither nominated nor performing.
Ella Mai made her debut performance of her hit song Boo’d up. Other impeccable performances were from Twenty One Pilots, Mariah Carey, Cardi B, Ty Dolla Sign and Khalid. Ciara brought Missy Elliot on for the onstage collaboration of Level Up.
