Viola Davis takes a fake shot on the red carpet at this year's Oscars.

Viola Davis amused fans as she "shotted" a fake drink on the Oscars red carpet in Los Angeles.

Wearing an elegant and sophisticated white Alexander McQueen outfit, the Ma Rainey's Black Bottom actress hilariously took advantage of a "free" bar with her air shot.

Swilling the non-drink around her mouth, the 55-year-old acted out everyone's thoughts when taking a short drink as she winced as it "went down".

Her husband Julius Tennon even joined in on the act and fans on Twitter were loving it.

One fan wrote: "She makes it look so real! Great actress. Stunning woman. Beautiful look."

Another wrote: "the way her husband did it with her too."

And a third added: "someone give viola Davis an oscar for being viola davis."

Maria Bakalova also followed suit by taking an air drink too in what appeared to be becoming a red carpet trend for 2021.

Viola paid tribute to her late Ma Rainey's Black Bottom co-star Chadwick Boseman as she arrived.

The Black Panther actor died in August last year aged 43 following a private four-year battle with colon cancer.

Viola, who is nominated for the best actress prize for playing jazz singer Ma Rainey, said Boseman was "authenticity on steroids".

She told E!: "This human being, this artist did not mistake his presence for the event, he just wanted to be an artist."

Davis said being at the Oscars was "an exclamation point on an already incredible experience", adding: "It could not have been a better experience and now it's just continuing."

This year's main ceremony for the 93rd Annual Academy Awards is taking place at Union Station in Los Angeles, with some nominees joining the ceremony remotely from international hubs.

Appearing via Zoom will not be allowed.

There is host, but there is an array of star-studded array of presenters.
