Melanie Brown and Eddie Murphy were destined to be one of Hollywood's power couples before the romance wore off and they ended up in court. The 45-year-old Spice Girl once declared that movie star Eddie Murphy was the "love of my life" after she quickly fell pregnant in the early weeks of their relationship.
The couple reportedly enjoyed 'poetic sex' but now they are due to face each other in court again as Mel looks to have his Sh3 million-a-month child support upped, after she had a dramatic decline in earnings after the coronavirus pandemic brought a halt to much of her activity this year. Mel and Eddie originally met in 2006 at a Beverly Hills party following the actor's divorce from his ex-wife Nicole Mitchell.
She claimed that it was 'love at first sight' and writing in her 2018 memoir, Brutally Honest, Mel remembered: "It was as if a 2,000-volt electric current had passed between us." Mel continued to write: "I felt a hundred different emotions at once, from confused to elated, to happy to scared, to relaxed to incredulous, and everything in between. "I felt I had known this man all my life and that I was staring at my destiny in his face."
The pair soon fell into a passionate relationship and Eddie, who is now 59, soon offered to move Mel into his mansion and was chauffeuring her around in his Rolls Royce. Mel declined the offer to move in but Eddie gave her a credit card and said it would "make him happy" if she was to use it.
Despite that, Mel returned the card after a couple of weeks and as the pair grew more passionate, Mel insisted that they did not sleep together until six weeks after they first hooked up. When it happened though, Mel said that it was "like poetry." In a draft extract of her memoir, that was seen by the Daily Mail, she reportedly wrote: "When it happened it wasn't sex. It was like poetry, every touch, every kiss every sense out of this world. We were both completely besotted with each other."
Speaking on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories last year, Mel recalled: "I’m the true romantic kind of love story kind of girl, I wanted him." Such was their love for each other, Eddie had asked Mel's dad for her hand in marriage and the father-of-seven at the time had soon looked to start a family with Mel. She soon fell pregnant with Angel, who is now 13, but their romance soon became fractured and the relationship headed down a slippery slope.
The end was nigh in December 2006, when Eddie claimed that he wasn't even sure whether the unborn child was his. The Nutty Professor star told a reporter: "I don't know whose child that is until it comes out and has a blood test. You shouldn't jump to conclusions, sir." This left Mel heartbroken and she recalled to Piers: "We were both to blame. I wouldn’t have said that publicly and he apologises to this day about that. He wishes he never said it, because that baby was planned; we planned that baby together and we were madly in love and it just went wrong, dramatically went wrong."
Angel was born on April 3, 2007, which was Eddie's 46th birthday. Two months later, on June 22, Mel announced that a DNA test had confirmed that Eddie was the father but he hasn't really bonded with his daughter until recent years.
They are now heading for a courtroom battle in the United States after Mel filed papers to force Eddie to declare his income, as she looks to squeeze more child support from the now father-of-ten. Eddie reportedly pays Sh3 million-a-month plus additional health insurance and education costs to Mel for Angel but she believes that his income should mean that there is more available for her daughter. Mel and Eddie have allegedly been on amicable terms in recent months but this could upset the barrel and the pair could be heading into the New Year fixed in a courtroom feud.
