Idris Elba has told edgy Luther fans a movie "is happening" - and he says it's going to be big. The show's die-hards were concerned talk about a film had gone quiet. But they are worried no more - the star says the ball is very much rolling and he can't wait to see the rogue detective portrayed on the big screen.
He says the "sky is the limit" for his ruthless character and the 47-year-old is already excited about what is in store. He told Digital Spy: "I've maintained I'd like to see it come to a film, and that is where I think we are heading towards. And I'm looking forward to making that happen. It is happening.
“Obviously you can sort of be a little bit bolder with the storylines, maybe international, a little bit more up the scale, but John Luther is always going to be John Luther.” Cramming so much into less than two hours won't be a problem, it appears. He added: "We've made varied seasons, one season was six episodes, one was four - Luther's adaptable.
"I think if we can figure out the formula to keep an audience captivated for an hour and a half, on a movie, I think it has definitely got the attributes to make that happen. "When you scale a movie up, you have to give it size - that means taking it into other territories, internationally.
"Obviously on a bigger international scale, it could take us anywhere." Idris said he was 'thankful' for 90s Crimewatch stint as he picked up TV BAFTA award on Friday. He was awarded the BAFTA Special Award – one of the academy’s highest accolades. The 47-year-old, who went on to star in The Wire, said: “It was the first rung on the ladder. A lot of actors don’t like to admit they did Crimewatch but I’m not embarrassed.”
