Selena Gomez has bravely shared her bipolar disorder diagnosis for the first time.

The pop diva, 27, confided in fellow former Disney star Miley Cyrus on her Bright Minds livestream on Friday.

In discussion, the singer revealed she found out she was bipolar after a visit to psychiatric hospital McLean Hospital in Massachusetts.

Often Selena has shared her struggles with depression in past interviews and in her music.

The It Ain't Me hitmaker said her diagnosis explained why she had suffered from depressions and anxieties for many years.

She said: "I finally had the knowledge of why I had suffered from various depressions and anxieties for so many years.

"Recently, I went to one of the best mental hospitals in... America, McClean Hospital, and I discussed that after years of going through a lot of different things, I realised that I was bipolar.

"And so, when I go to know more information, it actually helps me. It doesn't scare me once I know it and I think people get scared of that."

According to the NHS, people with bipolar suffer with mood swings which flip from one extreme to the other.

Selena bravely told Miley about her struggle as well as the singer's 106million fans.

The songstress also has a strong fan base made up of 172 million on social media.

In the wake of her diagnosis, Selena said she wanted to know everything about being bipolar.

"When I finally said what I was gonna say, I wanted to know everything about it and it took the fear away," she said.

Selena won the 2019 McClean Award in September for talking openly and promoting mental wellbeing and health.

The pop star has always been candid about her past headline-grabbing romances with Justin Bieber and The Weeknd.
