Gideon Mulyungi: Mwingi Central MP accused of assaulting his father

Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi has been accused by his father, Mulyungi Kithonga of assault.

According to the legislator’s father, Mulyungi allegedly assaulted him following a family disagreement, leading to the loss of his front teeth.

“I lost my front teeth when my son assaulted me in an argument. He rained kicks and blows on me until I fell to the ground in front of his mother and young siblings. One blow landed on my mouth," a sobbing Mr Kithonga told Sunday Nation.

The assault prompted a bleeding Mr Kithonga to remove his clothes and walk out of his homestead towards Mwingi Town.

"As a parent, I stripped naked to condemn him. I wanted to remind all my children that I am their father no matter their physical strength or wealth," he said, stating that the assault happened in 2004, after Mulyungi was elected the Chairman of Architectural Association of Kenya.

"Since the assault, he has never bothered to apologise to me or to initiate any form of reconciliation with me. I have since forgiven him but that incident is fresh in my memory and I still keep my four knocked out teeth,” said the 85-year-old.

The controversial legislator however dismissed the claims as propaganda.

“I am used to such propaganda, it never stopped me from winning the Mwingi Central seat,” he said.

Brother set up?

The allegations against Mulyungi came to light after his younger brother, Joseph Mwangangi Mulyungi was arraigned in a Mwingi court for allegedly stealing three CDF bursary cheques worth Sh18,000.

He pleaded guilty and was sent to Waita GK Prison awaiting formal sentencing.

According to family members who wept outside the court, the theft charges were a fabrication of the MP and that Mwangangi was duped by his influential brother into pleading guilty to the charges.

Domestic Violence

In 2018, the MP’s estranged wife and TV journalist Doreen Gatwiri accused him of assault, reporting the matter at Karen’s Hardy Police Station as recorded in OB 36/26/2/18.

Gatwiri, who dated Mulyungi for nine months before tying the knot claimed that she had endured three years of domestic abuse.

The MP was arrested but was released after spending two nights in custody.

In 2017, Mulyungi was arraigned in court over two counts of hate speech touching on President Uhuru Kenyatta and a third count of issuing offensive remarks against former Kitui Senator David Musila.

The case is still ongoing.
