Reactions to Nadia Mukami saying she’s Kenya’s best lyricist
Nadia Mukami has constantly been on the spotlight for all the reasons – catchy songs, best collabos, you name it. However, this time round, the 23-year-old singer has found herself on the receiving end after sparking a heated debate on Twitter. It all started when the Wangu hit maker crowned herself as the best song writer and lyricist of this generation, an opinion that did not settle well with a section of the netizens. In a number of tweets, the Kolo hit maker, called for introduction of Songwriter of the Year Awards, stating that there is need to shift the focus to the power of the pen.
“I am the Best Songwriter/ Lyricist of this Generation! Why don’t we have Songwriter of the Year in Awards? We need to shift focus to the power of the pen!” tweeted Nadia.
Kenyans on Twitter (KOT), joined the conversation- a section agreed with her while others opted to differ, stating that they are not consumers of her music.
“Nadia Mukami leads other follow, I hope other female upcoming artists are borrowing a leaf from this awesome lady,” @Lelauh_ tweeted. While @OchiBaba83 chimed in, “Nadia Mukami reps the real dreams of many Kenyans. The dream that hard work beats connections + corruption. Zuchu was mainly pushed by Diamond but Nadia worked her a*" off to reach her stardom. I love the two but I have got real respect for Nadia. She never relied on a godfather,”
However, those who did not agree with popular opinion like @Popeye_Ke wondered what makes Nadia Mukami stand out.
“What comes to your mind ukiskia about Nadia Mukami? What exactly makes you listen to her songs?” he tweeted.
Nevertheless, the Afro Pop musician stated that she is happy to have ignited a conversation on songwriting in the music industry, adding that a good number of song writers are not actually singers.
“I am happy to have sparked a conversation on songwriting! Am trending, am calling upon all award shows to have a category on Songwriter of the Year! Do you know that so many songwriters are not even singers? Let’s create a norm of appreciating them! Tag all award shows!”
Nadia commenced her music career when she was 18 years after a turnabout from poetry and writing. She was motivated by f her father who listened to Taarab music selections, as well as music from Tanzanian songstress Ray C. Nadia took up music professionally in 2015 when she wrote and released her single Barua Ya Siri while still at Maseno University.
