A primary school teacher in Nairobi has been arraigned in court for allegedly caning a student.
David Owan is alleged to have beaten the 11-year-old pupil in May over unpaid tuition fee.
The court heard that Owan caned the minor with a bamboo stick after he found him seated in class yet his parents had not paid for the evening tuition.
The minor is said to have run home to report the teacher. The court heard that it was not the first time the boy had been beaten over tuition fee.
The boy’s parents walked to the school to complain about the caning of their child. They were promised that action would be taken, and the matter reported to the education office.
This however was never to be, prompting the parents to report the matter to the police. Owan was arrested and charged in court. Police said there had been similar complaints from other parents about caning incidences.
The suspect however denied the charges and was released on a Sh20,000 bond. The case will be heard on November 28.
