Who is the real King of Comedy?

Local News
                                         Kings of comedy show

By Rose Kwamboka

On arrival at the KICC, 30 minutes later from the time the event was scheduled to start, I appear to be quite early.

I pass through three rigorous security checks to which I feel much safer once am in the hall. Little did I know that I was to wait a further hour or so, before the event starts as the crew winds up the set up.

The Dj is however kind enough to entertain the crowd with a mix of music.

By the time the event kicks off at around 8pm, the VIP section is barely full while regular seats are filled forcing the MC, Jalang’o to ask people to move closer to the front. The VIP people must have felt short changed.

The set up is however superb as the seats are in a semi-circle allowing the crowd to be within hearing range eliminating the echo effect as a result. The sound is subtle and the dance group entertainers do not disappoint.

Here is a low down of how the perceived kings of comedy performed:

Patrick Idrigi Salvador, Uganda

Getting a stand ovation was no joke. The renown, Ugandan stand up comedian got the crowd by his demonstrations, which were practical and witty. In addition, he related well to the Kenyan crowd and one could tell that he had done his research well on the Kenyan geography. Unlike most comedians, he did not spare the ladies by giving them complements but laid out their dirty linen in public. The fact that he did not feel important about himself scored him points and he was not afraid to make a fool of himself.

Verdict: 9/10

Eric Omondi, Kenya

Being his usual self, the audience loved his energy. He managed at some point to talk Shs7000 out of the Head of youth enterprise. His ability to mimic the Kisii dialect and certain childish behaviors was commendable. As we know him, he would not forget to make his jokes personal as he pulled his grandmother into his jokes which were fresh, but lost the crowd at some point when he went too much into his grandmother joke. It is for this reason we give him 8.5/10

David the student, Kenya

A new comer into the game, he took the audience back to when husbands were not romantic while introducing their wives and alluded to the fact that travelling to Kisii is not a journey but a full filled event. He however recycled a joke or two from the Churchill show but that did not deter the crowd from showing some love. His mimicry skills of the Kalenjin tribe scores him a 7/10

Miss Mandy Uzonitsha, Nigeria

She tried learning Swahili when she landed but articulating it using her Nigerian accent was downright funny. She must have done her homework well on the Kenyan showbiz industry as her jokes were up to date with current relevant happenings, like Emmy Kosgei’s marriage, Sonko’s affair, miraa business, Westgate attack and the JKIA fire all which she used to build up her jokes. She was systematic in her narration relating all events from beginning to end. Being the only lady, she managed to stir the crowd to 6/10.

Carl Joshua Ncube, Zimbabwe

His name was funny to pronounce in the first place. As his trademark, his jokes were religion based but he made a point of not attacking pastors and religious leaders. He played with people’s minds as he unveiled their perverted side. He also got the crowd schooled about why Zimbabwe has been having one president for so long; because they love conserving the environment and electing another would be an environmental hazard. He also subtly mentioned the effects of becoming fat till ones stomach presses against the diaphragm making one unable to talk audibly.

Verdict 6/10

Opiyo, Uganda

The 12 minutes he took the stage were not worth anyone’s money. His post election violence and presidential election jokes were not only outdated but also and indication of how out of touch he is about the Kenyan market. He did not relate to the crowd whatsoever with his porn star, female suicide bombers, sex, politician and bitches jokes that were also extremely insensitive. He used cliché phrases the entire time and made reference to outdated movies like Sex and the City. It did not help that he was the curtain raiser.

Verdict 3/10

Kagiso Lediga, South Africa

He started off well exposing how Americans are ignorant to other cultures, but exaggerated it to a point of no return. Then he jumped off to a farting joke that he prolonged and executed poorly, not that it was funny in the first place. Ironically, Salvador had explored a joke of the same kind successfully. His stage presence was not felt at all and you could feel the crowd’s disappointment from their hushed murmurs. High expectations given he is from South Africa coupled by an over inflated sense of superiority scores him a 2/10.
