In his ruling, the judge granted the prosecution’s request to have the eight held at Ugunja Police Station for a week to allow time for investigations.

During the hearing, it emerged that some of the students were minors, with two of them claiming to be 14 and 17-years-old.

The eight were arrested from November 23 to 25 after a video of them insulting Interior CS Fred Matiang’i and his education counterpart Amina Mohamed went viral, attracting President Uhuru Kenyatta’s ire.

“We will not and shall not entertain indiscipline and abuse from our young people. You must learn to respect your elders, as I talk to you today, those boys are where they should be in order for them to be disciplined...” said President Uhuru.

According to Ambira High School Principal Thomas Odhiambo, the viral clip was made by the students while they set their books ablaze in what they called “academic fire.”
